Liner notes:

One of the finest Broadway musicals of the past decade, “West Side Story” has been translated to the motion picture screen in what will unquestionably become recognized as one of the all-time great musical films. Starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno and George Chakiris, the film also includes the excellent musical score from the Broadway hit, as well as the exciting dance sequences.

To translate the score, with the richness and scope which it demands, United Artists Records called upon the outstanding piano team of Ferrante and Teicher, augmented by a full orchestral background, to perform this Leonard Bernstein masterpiece. That they have achieved this purpose becomes obvious from the opening strains of the music. With the lush background, the dynamic twin pianos accurately, effectively and most entertainingly portray the various moods, ranging from the haunting “Maria” to the savagery of the street scenes.

This album has been designed with one primary purpose in mind, your listening pleasure. To this end, the finest musicians available were obtained to perform the music which will last for many years to come. It is meant to be enjoyed time and time again, not only by the millions who have been entranced by the stage and film presentation, but by all who enjoy the very best in recorded music.
